Until recently, it wasn’t so easy to get to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca. However, with the opening of the new highway, travelers can make the journey in under 3 hours. But what is the best way to get to Puerto Escondido from the region’s capital?
Bus
The bus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido takes between 3 and 4 hours. Buses are usually comfortable, with a toilet on board and reclining seats. They often advertise WiFi but we don’t recommend you count on this!
The benefits of traveling to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca by bus is that it’s relatively economical, making it a good option for budget travelers.
You are, however, restricted to the bus company’s timetable. The buses also tend to blast the air con, which can be uncomfortable. We recommend taking a blanket and face masks to mitigate the negative effects of poor ventilation systems.
Plane
We do not recommend flying from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. Direct flights from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido do not run, with routes often requiring a change in Mexico City. This option is not eco-friendly, nor is it kind to your pocket.
