What is the Baby Sea Turtle Release?
“Baby Sea Turtle Release” is an ecotourism activity that offers participants the chance to support the survival of endangered sea turtles by releasing them into the ocean.
How Does the Process Work?
Seven of the eight sea turtle species worldwide visit Mexican coasts to nest. Female turtles dig nests in the sand, lay fertilized eggs, and cover them. About two months later, baby turtles emerge, but only a small percentage survive due to predators and other risks. Releasing turtles helps improve their chances by guiding them safely to the sea.
Releases take place daily at sunset (around 5:00 p.m.), making it a perfect family activity.
How to Participate?
- Receive an introductory talk about the turtles.
- Handle the baby turtle carefully using a special gourd.
- Place the turtle on the sand and watch it instinctively head toward the sea.
Releasing turtles is a delicate process that ensures their safety and survival in their first moments of life.
Nature’s Challenge
Once on the sand, the baby turtles use natural instincts to find their way to the ocean, guided by the sound of waves. However, predators like seagulls pose a significant threat during these moments.
If the turtle reaches the sea, it embarks on a journey that can last over 50 years. Remarkably, these turtles are philopatric, meaning they return to their birthplace to nest and continue the life cycle.
